Review your Medicare plan before December 7
Each year brings a window when Medicare beneficiaries can look again at their coverage and decide whether it still fits how they actually use care. This guide walks through what to gather, what to compare, and which questions are worth asking before you make a decision.

Annual Enrollment is open: take the Medicare plan quiz
Annual Enrollment runs Oct 15 to Dec 7.
Gather your information before you compare anything
A useful review starts with paperwork, not plan brochures. Pull together your Medicare card, any current plan ID cards, and the annual notice your plan mails about changes for the coming year. Write out every prescription you take, including dosage and how often you refill it. List the doctors, specialists, and pharmacies you want to keep. With that in hand, comparisons become concrete instead of guesswork, and conversations with a licensed agent go much faster.
Read the plan details side by side, not one at a time
Coverage differences often hide in the structure rather than the headline figures. Look at how each option handles provider networks, referral requirements, drug tiers, and annual out-of-pocket limits. Check whether your specific pharmacy is treated as preferred. Consider extras you would genuinely use versus ones that simply sound appealing. Reviewing two or three options in a single sitting makes the tradeoffs visible, since a plan that looks appealing alone can read differently next to an alternative.
Ask questions and verify before you commit
Nothing in a plan summary replaces checking your own situation. Ask whether your prescriptions appear on the formulary, how prior authorization works, and what happens if you travel or move. Confirm provider participation directly with the office rather than assuming. If you speak with a licensed insurance agent, ask which carriers they represent. Keep notes with dates and names, and give yourself time to reread the plan documents before the enrollment window closes.
