The glittered nail look is one of the hottest trends this season, but it seems to be one trend that is giving quite a few women a hard time when they are trying to recreate the look at home.  Let’s face it, if you have tried it, then it is likely that you have ended up with glitter everywhere or nails that were missing the mark.  Well, there are some simple things that you can do to make sure that you nail this look once and for all.  Pun intended.  You will be happily stepping out in style with the glittered nail look of your dreams without looking like you just emerged from a Ke$ha concert.

What You Need to Get Started

Before you can master the glittered nail look you will have to make sure that you have all of the right supplies before you get started.  You will need a clear base coat,  a top coat, and loose glitter.  When you purchase glitter make sure that you are picking out a glitter that is fine and is going to adhere to your nail flat.  If you want something chunkier it is going to be harder to master the look and it might not be possible to get your nails completely smooth without a lot of additional work on your part.

Before you get started make sure that you lay down some pieces of paper so that you can save the excess glitter and funnel it back into the container.  Not only will this make your glitter last longer and give it more life but it will also help make the clean up time much easier.

The All-Over Glitter Nail Technique

Step 1 – Apply a clear base coat to your nails.  Make sure that you are applying the coat very evenly as this is how the glitter is going to “stick” to your nail.

Step 2 – Dip your nail into the container of glitter.  Make sure to roll it back and forth a bit to ensure that your entire nail is coated in glitter.

Step 3 – Tap your finger to remove the excess glitter from the nail.  If you want to make sure that all excess glitter is off you can gently brush it with a dry make up or nail brush (personally I use an old eye shadow brush for this).  If the glitter does not seem like it is flat then use a clean dry finger to gently press it into the nail.

Step 4 – Use a small cotton swab to remove the excess glitter that is on your cuticles or the finger around your nail.  You might have to use more than one but taking this extra step will keep the nails looking precise.  You can also try an eye shadow brush for this first but if it seems to be a bit sticky then the cotton swab will quickly get it off.

Step 5 – Repeat these steps for all of the nails that you would like to have glittered. Some women choose to just have one or two glittered nails per hand and others want them to all have glitter.

Step 6 – Use a top coat.  You will want to use multiple coats for the top coat because it can be quite difficult to get this done right.  Personally I would recommend at least three coats of the top coat but I usually use more like five just to be safe.
